Types of Zebra Blinds We Install in Ottawa
Zebra blinds, sometimes called banded or dual shades, use a dual-layered fabric with alternating sheer and solid bands. The front and back layers slide past each other. Line the solids up and you get privacy. Offset them and soft light comes through the sheer stripes.
Light-Filtering Zebra Blinds
The most popular version. The solid bands are a light-filtering fabric, so even closed the room stays bright. Good for living rooms, kitchens and home offices.
Blackout Zebra Blinds
The solid bands are a room-darkening or blackout material. With the bands closed, the room goes dark enough for sleep. Some light still comes past the edges, so for nurseries we suggest an outside mount with overlap.
Cordless Zebra Blinds
A cordless tensioner lets you raise and lower the blind from the wrapped bottom rail, and a small bead or wand handles the band alignment. No long cord loops for kids or pets to reach.
Motorized Zebra Blinds
Motorized wand control or a tubular motor in the aluminum headbox lets you open and close the bands from a remote, an app or your voice. On hot south windows, schedules are the real win.

5 Things Ottawa Buyers Get Wrong About Zebra Blinds
- Assuming all zebras are see-through at night. Light-filtering zebras show silhouettes with lights on inside. Room-darkening vanes fix that.
- Buying them cut to the nearest inch. Zebras show every mistake. A blind an inch narrow leaves a bright strip at the side that you notice every morning.
- Ignoring band alignment. When the bands on two neighbouring windows sit at different heights, the room looks off. We order matching drops and check alignment tolerance at install.
- Picking the cheapest fabric. Low-grade zebra fabric is cut with a hot knife and frays. Ours uses ultrasonic cutting for clean edges that last.
- Forgetting the headbox. An open roller looks unfinished on a zebra. A transition cassette or aluminum headbox hides the roll and gives a clean top line.
What Stops Ottawa Homeowners From Buying Zebra Blinds?
Price shock. Zebras cost a bit more than rollers because there are two layers of fabric. At $220-$750 per window installed, most Barrhaven and Kanata houses with 10-14 windows land between $3,000 and $6,000.
Custom vs stock. In our opinion, zebras are the one blind where stock sizing hurts the most. The bands make every gap and mismatch obvious, and big-box sizes almost never match new-build windows to the sixteenth.
Is motorization worth it? On big south and west windows, yes. Scheduling the bands to close at 2pm in July keeps a family room usable. On a powder room, no.
Delivery timeline. About 3-4 weeks from measure to install, or 2 weeks with rush delivery for $150-$450 if you are moving in soon.

Do Zebra Blinds Give Privacy at Night?
It depends on the fabric. With light-filtering zebras, closing the bands blocks the clear view in, but once your lights are on, people outside can make out shapes. That is fine for a living room that faces the backyard. For street-facing rooms and bedrooms, choose room-darkening vanes. The solid stripes are dense enough that a lit room reads as a soft glow from outside, not shapes. We bring both to the house so you can stand outside at dusk and judge for yourself, which is the most honest test there is.
How Long Do Zebra Blinds Last?
A good zebra blind lasts 8 to 12 years in an Ottawa home. Three things shorten that: frayed edges from cheap hot-knife cutting, UV fade on south and west windows, and stretched fabric from forcing a stuck blind. Ultrasonic-cut edges, a UV-stable fabric and a smooth cordless tensioner or motor all add years. Clean them twice a year with a vacuum brush, and do not yank the bottom rail sideways.
Zebra Blinds vs Roller Shades
Both roll up into a headbox and both come cordless or motorized. The difference is control. A roller is up or down. A zebra lets you filter light without raising the blind, because the sheer and solid bands slide past each other. Rollers are a little cheaper ($180-$600 vs $220-$750 per window) and offer true solar screen fabrics with openness ratings, which zebras do not. Zebras look more modern and give more daytime flexibility. Plenty of Ottawa homes use both: zebras in the living spaces and blackout rollers in bedrooms.
