Types of Patio Door Blinds We Install in Ottawa
Patio doors are the hardest-working windows in the house. The right covering depends on the door type, how wide it is and how often it opens.
Sliding Patio Door Blinds
For standard 6- to 8-foot sliders: fabric or S-vane verticals, rollers on extension brackets, or cellular shades in a vertical format.
Panel Track Shades
Wide fabric panels on a sliding track, stacking behind each other to one side. Our first pick for wide sliders and modern rooms.
French Door Blinds
Slim blinds or shades mounted directly on each door, with hold-down brackets so they stay put when the door swings.
Vertical Blinds for Sliders
Wand-controlled verticals with split stack or one-way stack. Affordable, tough and still the best light control on a wide opening.

5 Things to Measure Before Choosing Patio Door Blinds
- Handle clearance. How far the handle sticks out decides whether a roller needs extension brackets.
- Which side opens. The stack should sit on the fixed panel side, not across the opening.
- Stack-back width. How much wall space you have beside the door for the open blind.
- Frame depth above the door. Some sliders have almost no flat frame, so we mount on the wall above.
- Door glass depth on French doors. Shallow-profile shades and hold-down brackets need a little room to clear the handle.
What Stops Ottawa Homeowners From Replacing Patio Door Blinds?
Price shock. A wide panel track can approach $1,400. In our opinion, the door you use the most deserves the covering that works best, and fabric verticals cover most sliders well under $800.
Custom vs stock. Stock patio door blinds come in one or two sizes and rarely clear the handle properly. Ours are measured to the door and the hardware.
Is motorization worth it? On very wide or heavy doors, and on south-facing sliders you want shaded every afternoon, yes.
Delivery timeline. About 3-4 weeks. Verticals are often quicker.

Blinds for French Doors: Mounting on the Door Glass
French doors swing, so the covering has to move with them. We mount a slim blind or shade directly on each door, inside the glass area or on the door frame, then add hold-down brackets at the bottom so it does not flap or bang when the door opens. Shallow-profile products are key: cellular shades, mini blinds and slim rollers clear lever handles where a deep wood blind would not. Cordless or top-down bottom-up cellular is the most popular choice for French doors in Convent Glen and Westboro homes, since it gives privacy, insulation and an easy reach.
Best Blinds for Sliding Patio Doors: Vertical vs Panel Track vs Roller
Fabric or S-vane verticals ($250-$800) give the best light control on a wide opening, tilt to direct light, and are the most affordable. They suit family rooms and basement walkouts. Panel tracks ($900-$1,400) look modern and slide like a curtain, stacking neatly to one side. Best for wide sliders in main living spaces. Rollers ($450-$900) look clean and minimal but must be fully raised to use the door. Good for sliders that are opened a few times a day, not twenty. If you are replacing old PVC verticals, see our vertical blinds page for modern options.
