Window Blinds Kanata: Motorized, Zebra and Roller Shades from Kanata North to Glen Cairn

By The Window Blinds Ottawa Crew ·

Window Blinds Ottawa dispatches its measurement team to Kanata tech-corridor homes within 2 business days, from Kanata North and Kanata Lakes down through Beaverbrook, Katimavik-Hazeldean and Glen Cairn. Every window is laser-measured to the sixteenth of an inch, and you see Hunter Douglas, Levolor and Graber samples in your own light before anything is ordered. Buyers here lean toward motorized blinds and zebra shades, and we do more Lutron and PowerView installs in the west end than anywhere else in the city. Pricing is published in CAD, so you know the range before the measurer rings the bell.

Most jobs here are whole-floor projects: 10 to 18 windows, a two-storey great room and at least one west-facing office that cooks by 3pm. We plan those as one order so the fabrics, bands and motors all match, then install in a single day.

What We Hear on Local Measures

Glare, Drafts and Hard-to-Reach Windows in Kanata

Afternoon glare in Kanata Lakes home offices

From about 2pm the sun washes out monitors and heats the room, so the blinds stay shut and the office goes dark.

Why it happens here: The Kanata North Technology Park has more than 540 technology companies, and many of the K2K households we measure run a west-facing home office, where July afternoons average a 27°C high.

How we fix it: Motorized blinds with a 3% or 5% solar fabric drop on a schedule before the glare starts and lift again at sunset, so the view stays.

1

Light gaps at the edges

Blinds cut to the nearest inch leave a bright stripe down each side at 7am. A blind made to the sixteenth closes edge to edge.

2

Cold glass in January

The cold spot by the sofa is usually the window chilling the air. A double-cell cellular shade traps air at the glass.

3

Yellowed, warped slats

Summer UV breaks down builder-grade vinyl on south and west windows. Bowed, yellow slats will not recover.

4

Frayed or looped cords

Older corded blinds do not meet Canadian cord rules and wear out at the lift. Cordless fixes both.

How We Work

How a Whole-Floor Order Works, 5 Steps

The same five steps on every job, from one window to a whole house.

  1. 1

    In-Home Laser Measurement

A certified measurer visits and records every window to within 1/16 of an inch, including jamb depth, square and obstructions like handles and cranks.

  2. 2

    Design Consultation

400+ fabric, wood and cellular samples checked against your trim, floors and real window light, with a written CAD quote before you commit.

  3. 3

    Order and Manufacture

Some companies measure to the nearest inch and the blind sits an inch short. We order to exact specs through 15 Canadian suppliers.

  4. 4

    Delivery and Verification

Our lead installer checks every blind against the job sheet when it lands, so the size, colour and hardware are right before the truck leaves.

  5. 5

    Professional Install

Single-day WSIB-covered install, packaging hauled away, and a written 2-year workmanship warranty handed over at the door.

West-End Window Know-How

How We Get to the West End Fast

Our Nepean showroom sits about 15 minutes away via Highway 417, so a measure out here is a short run for our team. We block out west-end appointments two days a week and keep a measurer on that side of the city on those days, which is why most bookings get a visit within 2 business days of the first call.

Install trucks leave Nepean early, take the 417 past the Canadian Tire Centre exit and are usually on your driveway by 8:30. For Kanata North Technology Park offices and home offices off March Road, we book installs outside meeting hours when you ask. Two-storey windows get the tall ladder kit and a two-person crew, so nobody is balancing on a kitchen chair.

Great Rooms and Teron-Era Homes We Know Well

Kanata Lakes and Kanata North are full of 2000s and 2010s executive homes with two-storey great rooms, transom windows and big south or west glass. Those are the windows where motorized shades earn their keep: a 16-foot-high window is not something you want to reach with a wand twice a day. We spec Hunter Douglas PowerView or hardwired Lutron Serena there and tie them into schedules so the shades drop before the afternoon sun hits the TV.

Bill Teron's planned community started with its first street, Tiffany Crescent, in 1964, and Beaverbrook and Katimavik-Hazeldean still have plenty of 1970s and 1980s split-levels with original aluminum sliders and dated vertical blinds. Those windows are often slightly out of square after 40-plus winters, so we measure all three widths (top, middle, bottom) and order to the smallest. Glen Cairn has a mix of both, plus a lot of young families who want everything cordless.

Our recent Lutron Serena residence here ran $12,500 for the main floor and took 4 weeks from measure to install, wired into the existing lighting scenes so the shades close at 6pm without anyone touching a button.

Afternoon Sun, January Cold and Your Blind Choice

West-facing Kanata Lakes windows take some of the hardest afternoon sun in the city because there is little tree cover in the newer phases, and July highs average 27°C. A 3% or 5% openness solar roller cuts the glare on screens while keeping the view of the pond or the street.

In January the same glass is a cold sink. A lot of clients here pair rollers in the living space with double-cell cellular shades in bedrooms, so they get glare control in summer and a warmer room on -25°C mornings.

Local Answers

Kanata Window Blinds Questions

How quickly can you measure in Kanata?

Within 2 business days. We keep a measurer on the west side two days a week, so Kanata North, Kanata Lakes and Glen Cairn bookings rarely wait longer than that.

Can motorized shades run on a schedule for a home office?

Yes. Battery Hunter Douglas PowerView or hardwired Lutron Serena shades can lower at 2pm on west windows and rise at sunset, tied into Alexa or Google Home. With more than 540 technology companies in the Kanata North Technology Park, home-office glare is one of the most common calls we get from K2K.

Can you reach two-storey great room windows?

Yes. We bring the right ladders and a two-person crew, and we usually recommend motorized shades for those windows so you never need a pole or a step stool again.

Do you serve Glen Cairn and Katimavik?

Yes. Glen Cairn and Katimavik-Hazeldean (K2L) are part of our regular west-end coverage, along with Beaverbrook, Kanata Lakes and Kanata North (K2K) and Bridlewood (K2M).

What do motorized blinds cost in Kanata?

Battery motorized blinds run $550-$1,800 per window and hardwired with a hub $1,200-$2,500. If you already have good rollers, a motorization retrofit is $350-$850 per window.
