Getting Around Richmond Road

Parking on Richmond Road and the narrow side streets off Westboro Village can be tight, so we book install times that avoid the morning rush and bring a smaller truck when needed. Homes along the river parkway and Island Park Drive usually have driveway access, which makes larger shutter installs easier.

Infills and Older Brick Homes We Know Well

The City's Richmond Road/Westboro Secondary Plan steers four- to six-storey infill onto Richmond Road and Scott Street, and the modern infills it produces tend to have floor-to-ceiling glass, high clerestory windows and corner windows that meet without a mullion. Hunter Douglas Silhouette gives soft, filtered light on those walls of glass, and Luminette works like drapery on wide patio sliders. Clerestories are a perfect case for motorization because nobody can reach them, and schedules or voice control handle them every day.

Most of the older housing went up between 1900 and 1960, and McKellar Park and Island Park have brick homes with deep window recesses and original wood trim. Inside-mount wood blinds, roman shades in linen, or hardwood shutters in custom frames suit those rooms and keep the trim visible. These older windows are rarely square, so we measure at three points and order to the tightest.

Hampton Park sits in between, with a lot of renovated bungalows where owners want something modern but not cold. Zebra blinds and solar rollers are common choices there.

Large infill glazing heats rooms fast in July and loses heat on January nights. A motorized schedule that lowers shades in the afternoon and again at sunset handles both, and Duette cellular in bedrooms adds insulation.

Brick homes stay cooler in summer but run drafty at the original windows in winter. Lined roman shades with a thermal liner help there and still look soft.
