Types of Blackout Blinds We Install in Ottawa
Blackout is a result, not one product. We get there with the right fabric plus the right edge control for your window.
100% Opacity Blackout Fabrics
Roller and roman fabrics with a blackout backing, or cellular shades with a foil lining inside the cells. Nothing passes through the material itself.
Side-Channel Blackout Tracks
Slim aluminum tracks mount on each side of the window. The edges of the fabric run inside them, so there is no gap for light to sneak around. Paired with a cassette head on top, this is how a room goes fully dark.
Bedroom and Nursery Blackout
Cordless blackout cellular or roller shades with side channels, sized for bedrooms, nurseries and shift workers. Bundled in our Bedroom Blackout Package.

The 6 Ways to Achieve True Blackout in an Ottawa Bedroom
- Start with 100% opacity fabric. No light through the material.
- Add side channels. They close the side gaps that every rolling blind needs.
- Use a cassette head. It covers the roll at the top, where light spills over.
- Mount outside with overlap. If channels will not fit, an outside mount that overlaps the frame by 2-3 inches on each side works well.
- Pick blackout cellular in cold rooms. Foil-lined cells block light and add insulation.
- Measure to the sixteenth. A blind half an inch narrow can never be dark. Nine times out of ten, this is where the previous company cut a corner.
What Stops Ottawa Homeowners From Buying Blackout Blinds?
Price shock. Side channels and cassettes add cost. In our opinion, buying blackout fabric without them is the real waste, because the room still glows at the edges.
Custom vs stock. Stock blackout blinds are made to fit inside a frame loosely. That guarantees light gaps. Custom blackout is measured tight.
Is motorization worth it? For a shift worker who wants the room dark at 7am every day, a schedule is very handy. For a nursery, cordless is usually enough.
Delivery timeline. About 3-4 weeks, or 2 weeks with rush when a baby is due or a schedule changes.

Why Light Leaks Around Blackout Blinds and How Side Channels Fix It
Every roller and cellular shade needs a little clearance so it does not rub the frame. That clearance, usually about a quarter inch per side, is where light bleed comes from. Morning sun turns those gaps into bright lines down each side of the window, plus a glow over the top roll. Side channels are slim tracks fixed to the window frame. The edges of the fabric run inside them, so the light has nowhere to go. A cassette head boxes in the roll at the top. Together they take a blackout blind from “mostly dark” to dark enough to sleep at noon. They need about 2 inches of flat frame on each side, which we check at the measure.
Blackout Blinds for Nurseries and Shift Workers
Babies nap during the day, and shift workers sleep while the street is busy. Both need real dark at hours when the sun is up. For nurseries, we recommend cordless blackout cellular with side channels: no cords, very dark, and the insulation helps keep the room at an even temperature. For shift workers, blackout rollers with side channels and a cassette head get closest to a hotel room. A motor on a schedule means the room is dark before you get home. Both work best on an inside mount where the recess allows. Ask about the Bedroom Blackout Package, which bundles the bedrooms into one order.
Light-Filtering vs Room-Darkening vs Blackout Blinds
Light-filtering softens daylight and gives daytime privacy. The room stays bright. Room-darkening drops a room to about dusk, good for living rooms with a TV and kids’ rooms where a little light is fine. Blackout blocks light through the fabric completely, and with edge control it makes a room truly dark. Most Ottawa homes use light-filtering in living spaces and blackout in bedrooms. If one room needs both, a dual roller or a top-down bottom-up cellular shade gives you both in one window.
