Types of Motorized Blinds We Install in Ottawa
A motorized blind has a small tubular motor hidden inside the roller or headrail. You control it from a multi-channel remote, a wall keypad, a phone app, a schedule or your voice.
Battery Motorized Blinds
A rechargeable lithium-ion battery motor, charged with a wand or a small solar panel. No electrician, no wall work. The most common choice for existing homes and condos.
Hardwired Motorized Blinds
Low-voltage 24V DC or line-voltage motors wired back to a power supply. Never needs charging. Best planned during a renovation or new build when walls are open.
Alexa and Google Home Blinds
A smart home bridge connects your blinds to Amazon Alexa or Google Home, so “close the living room” works by voice or as part of a routine.
Hunter Douglas PowerView
PowerView Gen 3 is Hunter Douglas’s own system, with app scenes, schedules and sun tracking. It runs Duette, Silhouette, roller and roman shades.
Lutron Serena
Lutron Serena integrates with Lutron lighting systems, so shades and lights move together on one keypad. Popular in Kanata tech-corridor homes.

- Hunter Douglas PowerView. Native app with scenes, schedules and automations.
- Lutron Serena and RadioRA. Shades and lighting on one keypad, very reliable.

What Stops Ottawa Homeowners From Buying Motorized Blinds?
Price shock. Motors add $550-$1,800 per window for battery and more for hardwired. In our opinion, motorizing every window is rarely needed. Motorize the tall, wide and hard-to-reach ones and leave the rest cordless.
Custom vs stock. Stock “smart” blinds from online stores often use proprietary apps that stop getting updates. We install established systems with local support.
Is motorization worth it? For a two-storey great room, a west wall that bakes every afternoon or a condo you want to look lived-in while away, yes, without much debate.
Delivery timeline. About 4 weeks. Hardwired jobs are timed with your electrician.

Can You Motorize Existing Blinds? Retrofit Options Explained
Often, yes. Motorizing an existing blind is like adding power windows to a 1998 Civic: works, but you can tell it was retrofitted. A retrofit kit puts a tubular motor inside an existing roller tube or replaces the headrail on some shades. It works best on newer rollers with a standard tube size and fabric in good shape. It does not suit most wood blinds, verticals or old corded blinds. Retrofits run $350-$850 per window. At the measure we check tube size, fabric weight and condition. If the fabric is already fading or the tube is too small, a new motorized roller is the smarter buy, and we will say so.
Do Motorized Blind Batteries Hold Up in Ottawa Winters?
Mostly, yes. Lithium-ion batteries lose some capacity in the cold, and a motor sitting against single-pane glass in January works a little harder. In practice, most battery motors in Ottawa homes still go 6 to 12 months between charges with one or two moves a day. Tips: keep schedules simple in winter, charge before the cold snap, and consider a small solar charging panel on south-facing windows. For very large or heavy shades on north windows, hardwired power removes the question completely.
Battery vs Hardwired Motorized Blinds
Battery motors need no wiring, install in a day and suit finished homes and condos. You recharge every 6-12 months. Hardwired motors run from low-voltage wiring and never need charging. They cost more and need an electrician, so they make the most sense in new builds and renovations. Many Kanata and Westboro clients choose hardwired for the great room and battery for bedrooms.
Hunter Douglas PowerView vs Lutron Serena vs Somfy
PowerView Gen 3 works only with Hunter Douglas shades but offers the widest product range, the best app and strong scheduling. Lutron Serena is the most reliable for shades and lighting together, and suits homes with Lutron lighting already. Somfy motors power many brands and connect to lots of hubs. As a Hunter Douglas Certified Priority Dealer, we install all three and pick based on what is already in your home.
Are Motorized Blinds Worth the Money?
They are worth it where they solve a daily problem: windows you cannot reach, rooms that overheat on a schedule, bedrooms you want dark before you wake, and homes that should look occupied while you travel. They are not worth it on every small window. A common Ottawa plan is to motorize the great room and the south side and keep cordless blinds everywhere else.
