Types of Cordless Blinds We Install in Ottawa
Cordless is a lift system, not a blind type. Almost every blind we sell comes cordless, and many products carry the Best for Kids child-safe certification.
Cordless Roller Blinds
A spring roller you lift and lower from the hem bar. Simple, inexpensive and clean-looking.
Cordless Cellular Shades
The most common cordless shade we install. Hunter Douglas LiteRise and similar systems are light and smooth, and the honeycomb adds insulation.
Cordless Wood and Faux Wood Blinds
Heavier blinds need a stronger spring. Levolor cordless systems handle the weight, with a wand for tilting the slats.
Cordless Roman Shades
A cordless safety lift removes the rear cords that older roman shades relied on, which used to be a real hazard.

5 Rooms Where Cordless Blinds Should Be Non-Negotiable
- Nurseries. Cribs end up near windows. No cord should ever be within reach.
- Kids’ bedrooms. Children climb on beds and dressers to look outside.
- Playrooms and basements. Unsupervised play time, often near low windows.
- Any room with pets. Cats chew cords and dogs get tangled.
- Grandparents’ homes. Visiting toddlers find the one corded blind in the house.
What Stops Ottawa Homeowners From Going Cordless?
Price shock. Cordless adds a little to the cost of most blinds, and at $250-$850 per window installed it is not the cheapest option. In our opinion, it is the one upgrade we would never skip in a family home.
Custom vs stock. Stock cordless blinds use generic springs. If the blind is cut down in the store, the spring can end up too strong or too weak, so the blind creeps. Ours are built to size with matched tension.
Is motorization worth it? For tall or hard-to-reach windows, yes. Motorized is the most cordless of all and adds schedules and voice control.
Delivery timeline. About 3-4 weeks, 2 weeks with rush delivery for $150-$450.

How Do Cordless Blinds Work? Spring Lift vs Motor
A spring-tension lift hides a coiled spring in the headrail. The spring is sized to balance the weight of that specific blind. Push up on the bottom rail and the spring helps raise it. Pull down and it holds wherever you stop. When the spring and blind are matched, it feels almost weightless. When they are not, the blind slowly creeps up or sags. A motorized cordless blind replaces the spring with a small motor and runs from a remote, wall switch, app or voice assistant. Spring lift is cheaper and great within arm’s reach. Motors make sense for high, wide or hard-to-reach windows. Compare options on our motorized blinds page.
Are Corded Blinds Still Allowed in Canada? Cord Safety Rules
Health Canada’s Corded Window Coverings Regulations (SOR/2019-97) came into force in May 2022. They set strict limits on how long an accessible cord can be and on the size of any loop that a child could reach. Most traditional corded blinds, with long pull cords and continuous loops, do not meet them. The rules apply to products sold in Canada, so old blinds already on your windows are not illegal to keep, but they carry the same risk they always did. The simplest fix is cordless or motorized. We install both and can usually replace a whole house’s corded blinds in one day.
