Barrhaven new build, 14 cordless cellular shades
Measured the week the owners got keys. Up before the movers arrived.
Window Blinds Ottawa has measured and installed Hunter Douglas, Levolor, Graber, and Shade-O-Matic blinds across the NCR for over 18 years, from a Barrhaven new-build with 14 cordless cellular shades at $4,200 to a Rockcliffe Park heritage home with 22 wood blinds in curved bay windows, a Centretown condo tower with 180 motorized rollers across 24 units, and a Kanata tech-exec residence with Lutron Serena hardwired integration across the main floor. In our opinion, a well-measured blind is like a tailored suit: it hangs clean, closes clean, and never looks store-bought. It still blows our mind how often homeowners inherit stock blinds cut an inch short of the window and spend five years staring at the gap.
Every blind is measured in-home to within one sixteenth of an inch, specified for Ontario Building Code 9.7 fenestration compliance where applicable, manufactured locally through our 15 Canadian supplier network, and installed by WSIB-covered crews carrying $2M CGL. We finish most single-home orders in a single day and back every install with Hunter Douglas Certified Priority Dealer standing held since 2012 and a written 2-year workmanship warranty across Kanata, Barrhaven, Orleans, Nepean, Stittsville, Gloucester and the rest of the NCR.
"At Window Blinds Ottawa, our vision is to give every NCR homeowner the exact same blinds they would get in a Rockcliffe heritage home, measured to the sixteenth of an inch and installed in a single day. We enjoy watching clients close a cordless cellular shade the first time and feel how smooth the lift mechanism is. We routinely hear that we exceeded their expectations, and this is what brings us joy."

Local Home Insights
Most blinds do not fail all at once. They get a little worse every season until you stop noticing. Nine times out of ten, Ottawa homeowners put up with tired blinds for years longer than they need to. If two or more of these sound familiar, it is time for a measure.
Visible light gaps. Blinds measured short leak morning sun around the edges. If you can see a bright stripe down each side of the window at 7am, the blind was cut to the nearest inch, not to your window.
Winter drafts at the glass. That cold spot by the sofa in January is often cold glass chilling the air. A double-cell shade traps air at the window and the cold spot fades.
Yellowed or warped slats. Ottawa summer UV breaks down builder-grade vinyl. Yellow, bowed slats on south and west windows will not recover.
Frayed or sticking lift cords. Worn cords are a safety issue as much as a nuisance, and older corded blinds do not meet today's Canadian cord rules. Cordless fixes both.
Renovation mismatch. New trim, new paint, new floors, and the same 1990s blinds. Coverings are the last thing people update and the first thing guests see.
The inch that makes the difference
Stock blinds cut to the nearest inch are like gym shorts worn to a wedding: works technically, but you'll feel it all day. A measured blind closes clean edge to edge.
Book a Free MeasureHonest Answers
We hear the same four worries on almost every measure. Here are straight answers.
In our opinion, the shock usually comes from not knowing the number until the salesperson is at your kitchen table. That is why every range is on this site. A typical Ottawa home with 10-14 windows lands between $2,800 and $9,500, and a condo with 6-8 windows between $1,800 and $5,500. You can drop motors, switch fabrics or phase rooms to hit a budget, and every line is itemised so you can see where the money goes.
Stock is fine for a basement or a standard-size rental window, and we sell it from the Nepean showroom. For the rooms you live in, custom wins because Ottawa windows are rarely square. A blind made to the sixteenth of an inch closes without gaps and lasts longer because it is not rubbing the frame.
For a nursery, a shift worker or anyone who wakes at 5am in June, yes. For most other bedrooms, room-darkening is plenty. True blackout also needs side channels or an outside mount, not just a thicker fabric, so we only quote it where you will notice the difference.
On two-storey windows, big south walls and anything you cannot reach, absolutely. On a powder room window, no. Most clients motorize three or four key windows and keep the rest cordless. Battery motors run $550-$1,800 per window, and existing rollers can often be retrofitted for $350-$850.
How We Work
From the first measure to the last bracket, this is what happens in your Ottawa home. Most houses go from measure to finished install in about 4 weeks.
A certified measurer visits and records every window to within 1/16 of an inch, including jamb depth, square and obstructions like handles and cranks.
400+ fabric, wood and cellular samples checked against your trim, floors and real window light, with a written CAD quote before you commit.
Some companies measure to the nearest inch and the blind sits an inch short. We order to exact specs through 15 Canadian suppliers.
Daniel Mackenzie oversees fulfilment so the hardware matches the job sheet. Every blind is checked for size, colour and brackets before the truck leaves Nepean.
Single-day WSIB-covered install, packaging hauled away, and a written 2-year workmanship warranty handed over at the door.

Know Before You Buy
Stock blinds are ready-made in standard sizes, usually from 24 to 72 inches wide, and you can pick them up the same week. They run about $95 to $600 per window. They work well on standard, square windows in basements, rentals and secondary rooms.
Custom blinds are measured in-home and manufactured to your exact window, then delivered in 3 to 4 weeks. They run $450 to $3,500 per window. You choose the fabric, colour, lift system and mount, and the blind fits edge to edge without a light gap.
Some windows are custom only: arches and other specialty shapes, oversized glass, bay and bow windows, and anything that needs a bespoke colour. Custom blinds measured in-home are like a dentist's crown: made for one mouth, lasts twenty years. Our custom blinds page walks through shapes, timelines and costs.
Choosing a Company
In our opinion, picking wrong costs more than picking the expensive blind. A cheap install that sits an inch short means paying twice. Before you book anyone, ours included, run through these eight points. A company that ticks all eight has the training, insurance and staying power to stand behind the work.
Nine times out of ten, this is where the previous company cut corners: they quoted from a phone call, had no showroom, and were gone when a bracket failed a year later. Ask for each item in writing. A good company will not mind.
A certified dealer has been trained on the products and has direct access to the full lineup and support.
Not a phone estimate or "send us your sizes". A trained measurer at every window.
Somewhere to touch samples and run working displays, and an address that will still be there next year.
Commercial general liability insurance in case something goes wrong in your home.
Installers covered for workplace injury, so a ladder accident is not your liability.
Ours is 2 years in writing. Manufacturer warranties are separate and vary by product.
A 613 number that rings a real person and a local base, not a national call centre.
Long enough to have seen every Ottawa window type and to still be around for service calls.
Case Studies
Real projects, real CAD numbers and real timelines. It still blows our mind when we finish one like the Rockcliffe bays, but most jobs look like the Barrhaven new build: measured, ordered, installed in a day.
Measured the week the owners got keys. Up before the movers arrived.
Laser-templated every pane of two curved bays and stain-matched to original trim.
Templated after hours, installed over 3 phased nights so no tenant lost coverage.
Hardwired shades tied into existing lighting scenes. They close at 6pm on their own.
Blackout rollers with side channels upstairs, light-filtering zebras downstairs.
Re-measured after another company got it wrong twice. Now on the building vendor list.

15 Canadian Supplier Network
These are the 18 blind, shade and shutter types we measure, order and install. Each one is measured in-home to within one sixteenth of an inch and built through our network of 15 Canadian manufacturers, including Hunter Douglas, Levolor, Graber and Shade-O-Matic. Prices are installed, per window, in CAD. Most Ottawa homes end up mixing two or three types: cordless cellular shades in bedrooms for warmth, zebra or roller blinds in living spaces for light control, and faux wood in kitchens and bathrooms where steam would warp real wood. For condos and commercial spaces, motorized rollers and solar screens do most of the work. Not sure where to start? Book the free measure and we will bring samples of all of them.
Residential: Ran into a good one last month in a Hintonburg semi. Homeowner wanted blackout cellular shades for a baby's room but the window had a 2-inch recess that stock sizes do not fit. We measured in-home, ordered Hunter Douglas Duette with side-channel tracks, and installed in a single morning. Client Priya W. said the room went from dusk-visible to pitch-dark in under 60 seconds.
Commercial: We did a Centretown condo tower on Bank Street for 180 motorized rollers across 24 units last fall, templated after-hours, installed over 3 phased nights so no tenant lost blind coverage, and ended up on the property manager's approved vendor list for the next build phase.

Seven questions that come up on almost every measure, answered short.
Blinds have slats or vanes that tilt (wood, faux wood, aluminum, vertical). Shades are one piece of fabric that rolls, folds or stacks (roller, zebra, cellular, roman). Shutters are hinged panels with louvers, built into a frame and fixed to the window. Blinds give tilt control, shades give softness and insulation, shutters give a permanent finished look. See window shutters for the fixture option.
Blinds do not create moisture, but closing a tight shade on a cold night keeps warm room air off the glass, so the glass gets colder and any humidity in the air condenses there. Keep indoor humidity around 30-40% in January, raise shades a few inches in the morning, and run bathroom fans. Moisture-proof faux wood or polyresin suits windows that sweat often.
Many Ottawa condo boards require a uniform colour facing the street, often white or grey backing. Check your declaration before choosing fabric. Floor-to-ceiling glass suits solar rollers, motorized shades or sheer shadings. Our Condo Blinds Package for 6-8 windows runs $1,800-$5,500, and we book elevators and loading docks with management.
Spec flame-resistant fabrics (NFPA 701), solar screens for glare on screens, cordless or motorized operation, and one consistent colour across the facade. Ask for WSIB clearance and $2M CGL, and plan phased or after-hours installs so tenants are not disrupted. Our 180-roller Centretown tower went in over 3 nights.
Inside mount sits within the window recess and shows off the trim, which suits heritage homes and clean modern rooms. It needs enough jamb depth, which we measure. Outside mount fixes above and beside the frame, blocks more light at the edges and makes a window look bigger. It is the go-to for shallow recesses and true blackout.
Bedrooms: blackout or double-cell cellular. Kitchens: faux wood or aluminum that wipes clean. Bathrooms: bathroom-grade faux wood or polyresin shutters. Living rooms: zebra, roller or solar screen for glare. Nurseries and kids' rooms: cordless only. Home offices: 3% or 5% solar roller.
Across Ontario, prices vary widely by brand, product and window size, and many companies only quote after a home visit. Our Ottawa prices are published: $95-$600 per window for stock-style blinds, $280-$1,250 for premium shades and wood, and $450-$3,500 for custom and specialty work, with whole-home packages for 10-14 windows from $2,800 to $9,500. The ten questions we hear most on Ottawa measures.
Installed prices run from $95 per window for vinyl or mini blinds up to $3,500 per window for bespoke custom blinds. Most Ottawa homes with 10-14 windows land between $2,800 and $9,500, and condos with 6-8 windows usually sit between $1,800 and $5,500. The biggest swings come from the material (vinyl vs real wood vs cellular), window size, motorization and whether a window is an odd shape like an arch or a bay. Every quote itemises measurement, materials, manufacture, delivery and install, so you can see exactly where the money goes and trim the options that do not matter to you.
Yes. The in-home measurement and design consultation is free and comes with a $150 credit toward your purchase. A certified measurer records every window to within 1/16 of an inch, notes the jamb depth and any handles or cranks in the way, and brings 400+ samples so you can compare fabrics, wood stains and cellular colours in your own light. You get a written, itemised CAD quote at the end of the visit. There is no obligation, and the measurements are yours to keep whether you order or not.
Standard custom orders take about 4 weeks from measure to install. Rush delivery in 2 weeks is available for a $150-$450 upcharge, which helps with Barrhaven and Stittsville possession dates or a listing photo shoot. Stock blinds in standard sizes can be picked up the same week from the Nepean showroom. Once your order lands we check it against the job sheet, then book a single install day. Most single-home installs are finished in one day, and condos with 6-8 windows are often done in a morning.
Stock blinds come in standard sizes from 24 to 72 inches for $95-$600 and can be picked up the same week. Custom blinds are measured in-home, made to your exact window and delivered in 3-4 weeks for $450-$3,500. Arches, oversized glass and bespoke colours are custom only. Stock is a fair choice for a rental, a basement or a standard-size bedroom window. Custom makes sense when the window is out of square, when you want edge-to-edge coverage with no light gaps, or when you want the blind to match trim, flooring or a smart-home system.
We measure and install across Ottawa and the NCR, including Kanata, Barrhaven, Orleans, Nepean, Stittsville, Gloucester, Westboro and the Glebe. Most in-home visits are booked within 48 to 72 hours. Nepean consultations are usually within 48 hours because the showroom is there, Kanata gets a measurer within 2 business days, and Orleans is on a weekly east-end route. If you are just outside these areas, call (613) 702-3022 and we will tell you the next available day.
Yes. We have held Hunter Douglas Certified Priority Dealer standing since 2012 and are also a Levolor Professional Dealer, a Graber Centurion Dealer and an authorized Shade-O-Matic installer. That gives you access to Duette, Silhouette, Luminette and PowerView alongside value lines, so we can quote the same window two or three ways.
Often, yes. A motorization retrofit runs $350-$850 per window depending on the blind and motor. We check the headrail and fabric weight in-home and tell you honestly when replacing makes more sense, for example when the fabric is already fading or the roller tube is too small for a motor.
Every install carries our written 2-year workmanship warranty. Product warranties come from each manufacturer and vary by line, so we give you the exact terms for your order in writing with the quote.
Yes. We are WSIB registered with $2M commercial general liability and have done projects like 180 motorized rollers across 24 units in a Centretown condo tower, installed over 3 phased nights so no tenant lost coverage.
Yes. Our 6,000 sq ft Nepean showroom has 400+ product samples and working displays. If you would rather stay home, the free consultation brings the samples to your windows.
