Types of Vertical Blinds We Install in Ottawa
Vertical blinds hang individual vanes from carrier stems on a headrail. A single wand turns the vanes and slides them open. That makes them the easiest blind to operate on a wide patio door that gets used twenty times a day.
PVC Vane Vertical Blinds
Rigid PVC vanes are the budget option. They wipe clean, shrug off dog noses and hockey sticks, and suit basement walkouts and rental units.
Fabric Vane Vertical Blinds
Fabric vanes hang softer and quieter, with bottom weights and an optional chain to keep them in line. They look far less “office” than PVC and are the most common upgrade we install.
S-Vane Vertical Blinds
S-vanes are curved so each vane overlaps the next, closing tighter for privacy and giving a more sculpted look. A good choice for main-floor sliders on view.
Patio Door Vertical Blinds
For sliders we use a heavy-duty headrail, a matching valance, and plan the stack so the door handle and lock stay clear.

5 Signs Your Vertical Blinds Need Replacing, Not Repairing
- Yellowed PVC vanes. UV breaks PVC down. Once it yellows, it also gets brittle and starts cracking at the top.
- Carrier stems snapping. One or two broken stems can be fixed. When they keep failing, the headrail is worn.
- Vanes won’t turn together. A slipping tilt gear in an old headrail usually means the whole rail is due.
- They clack every time the door opens. That is often the sign of light PVC with no bottom weights. Fabric or S-vane will be much quieter.
- They block the handle. If the stack was never planned, you fight it every day. A new split stack or one-way stack fixes the layout for good.
What Stops Ottawa Homeowners From Replacing Vertical Blinds?
Price shock. In our opinion, verticals are still one of the cheapest ways to cover a big opening properly. At $250-$800 per window installed, a new fabric vertical on a standard slider usually lands under $600.
Custom vs stock. Stock verticals come in a handful of widths and get trimmed. On a slider that means vanes too short or a stack that blocks the handle. Ours are made to measure.
Is motorization worth it? Rarely on verticals. If you want a motorized patio door, a motorized roller or panel track is a better match.
Delivery timeline. About 2-3 weeks for most vertical orders, 2 weeks with rush.

Are Vertical Blinds Outdated? Modern Options
The yellowed plastic verticals from the 1990s are dated, no argument. Modern verticals are a different product. Fabric vanes in linen-look weaves, curved S-vanes and slim valances look calm and clean on a big slider. They also still do something no horizontal blind does well: tilt to direct light while staying closed across a wide opening. If you want a truly modern look on a slider, compare a panel track shade on our patio door blinds page. Many Ottawa clients choose fabric verticals for the basement walkout and panel track upstairs.
Fabric vs PVC Vertical Blind Vanes
PVC vanes are stiff, cheap and easy to wipe down. They suit basements, rentals and homes with big dogs. Their weak point is UV: on a south-facing slider, PVC can yellow within a few summers. Fabric vanes cost more but hang softer, filter light more evenly and are quieter when the door opens. They need bottom weights and occasional vacuuming. If your slider faces the street or the main living space, fabric is worth the extra. If it opens onto a basement patio, PVC is perfectly fine.
